Kim’s Video Salemi (KVS)
is a recent creature, the latest emanation that arises from the meeting, which took place back in 2009, between the glorious history New Yorker of Yongman Kim, creator and manager of Kim's Video of the East Village of the Big Apple, and the small and complex reality of a small town in the Trapani hinterland. Two realities as distant as possible, which come together – now and in the future – to create a continuous project become. A project of projects, made of cinema and for cinema. KVS aims to design, implement and promote: film festivals and events, retrospectives on themes and authors, film workshops and internships, film locations, competitions for film authors and writers, collaborations with newspapers of sector, museum installations, cinema courses, genre and auteur film video libraries… All this, treasuring the decennial experience of mr. Yongman Kim and trying to propose Salemi and its territory, as a setting for events, appointments and programs that connect the Mediterranean to the rest of the world.
YONGMAN KIM
Yongman Kim, of Korean origin, emigrated to the United States in 1979. In New York, in the East Village, he opened first a laundry and then a VHS tape rental shop. The business is so well established that it expands very quickly, focusing above all on offering its customers cinematic titles international that is impossible to find elsewhere. In a few years Kim's Video of New York becomes the real thing point of reference for cinephiles in the Big Apple. In the first half of the 00s, with the phenomenon of piracy and the opening of platforms television shows, activity is down and mr. Kim decides to donate his entire collection of tens of thousands of VHS tapes and DVD to the city of Salemi. Thus began his relationship with the city of Trapani, which takes him, in the summer of 2022, to receive honorary citizenship.
The need to bring cinema back to the people, in an era in which the flow of audiovisual information is declined from the immaterial and from heterogeneous use, led the KVS to promote CINEKIM. A media process adaptable to various needs and constantly updated, the very soul of the KVS idea. Whether we are talking about unpublished cinema in Italy or contemporary Italian cinema, the guidelines will always be the ones to have physical projections within public scenarios, to pursue the gratuitousness of the offer and, fundamental point, to pursue a philological reading of the works presented. A sort of infinite retrospective that adds, multiplies and separates themes, national cinematographies, settings, styles, fascinations.

1° EDIZIONE CINEKIM 2022
The first edition of CINEKIM, held from 26 to 29 July 2022 in the atrium of the Norman-Swabian castle of Salemi, saw a meeting between the Palermo director Salvo Cuccia who spoke with mr. Yongman Kim on the history of US home video and on the reality of international cinema today. The following evenings there were projections on the big screen of the films (unreleased for the national market): "La isla de las mentiras" by Paula Cons, "Sibel" by Claga Zencirci and Guillame Giovanetti, "Jumbo ” by Zoe Wittock.
ODYSSEY proposes itself as a sort of new socio-cultural platform which, exploiting the audiovisual media, aims to re-establish an anthropological association from a series of dissociations such as emigration, urban abandonment, community decline, globalization as a push towards the annulment of identities.
Our city remains, despite the many negative processes that have characterized it for decades, the place where 'things' and 'events' multiply; a dynamic condition of concentrations and absences, flows and withdrawals, virtues and criticalities. Trips and returns...
In short, Salemi is configured as a space where subjectivations take place, and ODYSSEY's task is precisely to identify the changes that have taken place and are taking place in the urban space. And thanks to this recognition, we believe it will be possible to try to unite Salemi, its people and its territory with the great dynamics that are underway in both the Mediterranean, continental and intercontinental areas.
The first edition of the happening , will be held in July, and will involve two crews of students from the Baltic Film Media Arts School of the University of Tallinn (Estonia), and a group of artists from Ballroom Marfa (Texas, USA).
< p>This first appointment, still experimental in many respects, will be followed by other editions that will see crews of audiovisual artists from all over the world involved.
